She released her debut single, "Obsessed," in 2021 and followed with her debut EP "AR" (2023). In 2024, she signed with Columbia Records and released her first major-label single "Diet Pepsi," which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and marked her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. The single preceded her debut studio album "Addison" (2025), which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. Rae was nominated for Best New Artist at the 68th Grammy Awards.
Rae was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Monty Lopez and Sheri Easterling. She has two younger brothers, Enzo Lopez and Lucas Lopez, and an older half-sister, Macye Neumeyer. Her parents divorced and remarried several times throughout her childhood. Rae began dancing competitively at the age of six and participated in competitions across the United States. She briefly attended Louisiana State University, studying broadcast journalism, before leaving to pursue her career on TikTok.
Rae joined TikTok in July 2019, posting dance videos to trending songs. Within months, she gained over one million followers and joined the collective The Hype House in December 2019. She signed with talent agency WME in January 2020 and began a weekly podcast with her mother titled "Mama Knows Best," later rebranded as "That Was Fun?"
In March 2021, Rae released "Obsessed." She launched her cosmetics line, Item Beauty, which was discontinued in 2023, and also founded a fragrance line. Rae made her feature film debut as Padgett in "He's All That" (2021), which was a remake of "She's All That" (1999). In February 2022, Rae joined the cast of the film "Fashionista," and multiple songs from her unreleased EP leaked online, later leading to the release of "AR" on August 18, 2023. The EP debuted at number 19 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart. In November 2023, she appeared as Gaby in "Thanksgiving."
In 2024, Rae featured on Charli XCX's remix of "Von Dutch," which appeared on the remix album "Brat and It's Completely Different but Also Still Brat," and on A. G. Cook's album "Britpop" on the track "Lucifer" with Charli XCX. In August 2024, she released "Diet Pepsi" through Columbia Records, which peaked at number 54 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Rae performed the song live at Madison Square Garden with Troye Sivan and Charli XCX on the Sweat tour. In October 2024, she released the single "Aquamarine," with a remix featuring Arca following in November.
In February 2025, Rae released "High Fashion" and appeared on the cover of Vogue France. In April, she performed "Aquamarine / Arcamarine" at Coachella with Arca. Her debut album, "Addison," was released on June 6, 2025, preceded by the singles "Headphones On" and "Fame Is a Gun." The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, selling 48,500 album-equivalent units in its first week. Rae celebrated the release with a live concert at New York City's The Box, produced in partnership with Spotify. From August to November 2025, she embarked on her first headlining tour, The Addison Tour, performing in Europe, North America, and Australia. She performed at two spotlight events hosted by the Grammy Museum in August and October 2025.
Rae appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" in October 2025, performing "Diet Pepsi" in a gold gown previously worn by Gypsy Rose Lee. She also appeared in the third season of Netflix's series "Monster: The Ed Gein Story" as Evelyn Hartley and is set to star in the live-action animated film "Animal Friends" alongside Ryan Reynolds and Aubrey Plaza, scheduled for release on June 5, 2026. In November 2025, Rae was nominated for Best New Artist at the 68th Grammy Awards and performed "Fame Is a Gun" as part of a medley with other nominees. In December 2025, she was named artist of the year by The Guardian, while "Addison" was named best album of 2025 by The Washington Post and The Fader. On January 29, 2026, Rae performed at Spotify's Best New Artist Party and is scheduled to perform at South American editions of Lollapalooza in March 2026, as well as Coachella in April 2026.
