PHILIPPINES Nocturnal We started out as a project between Erick Encinares (Sleepyheads) and Alex Paita (Sleepyheads, Mint Car) and Clifford Portilla (Kid Auto Races at Venice, Styrene). From jamming in the studio as a trio the band evolved into an ambient chamber-folk group when violinist Yul Garrido and keyboardist Carol Pajaron came in. Though devoid of a drummer (Clifford left for personal reasons), they were able to record an album without even knowing they were already making one. It was only their first time to jam together, and they hadn’t even talked about the musical direction yet! Some of them weren't even properly introduced to each other at the time. The band would just play their instruments to their whim, taking off from whoever begins a riff or a chord, and relying solely on their “feel.” Erick and Alex would even switch places as guitarist and drummer. The result was an astounding 11-song EP they dotingly call Wet Market Session, recorded live near an actual wet market. Wanting to explore more possibilities, they conducted another live recording session, this time with bassist Costantino Zicarelli and drummer Lara Agulto (Death by Tampon). With Lara’s punk sensibilities and Cos’ noise-pop/experimental tendencies, the band produced an entirely different-sounding album called Dry Market Session. Nocturnal We is currently dabbling in creating more structured songs, with new members JP Agcaoili (The Late Isabel) on drums and Ae Geli on vocals. ABOUT THE LIVE ALBUMS During our first few encounters we jammed at the studio, most of us meeting for the first time, and managed to record the tunes live. The first one (Wet Market Session) came off as Red House Painters-meets-The Blue Nile instrumental numbers, while the second set (Dry Market Session) is characterized by fuzzy experimental Sonic Youth/The Birthday Party/No Wave-ish feud. If you'd like to hear more of our accidental creations, you may correspond with us and we'll see what we can do... Happy listening... WET MARKET SESSION 1. 30-Second Sleep 2. Delayed Rail Transit 3.
