Wir sind Helden (German pronunciation: [viːɐ̯ zɪnt ˈhɛldn̩], meaning "We are heroes") was a German pop rock band established in 2000 in Hamburg and later based in Berlin. The band consisted of Judith Holofernes (lead vocals, guitar), Pola Roy (drums), Mark Tavassol (bass), and Jean-Michel Tourette (keyboard, guitar).
The band gained wider attention in 2002 with the song "Guten Tag", which received radio airplay and television exposure despite the absence of a recording contract. Their debut album "Die Reklamation", released in 2003, reached number 2 on the German albums chart and sold over 500,000 copies. Subsequent albums, "Von hier an blind", "Soundso", and "Bring mich nach Hause", all reached top positions in the German and Austrian charts.
The band’s music has been associated with influences from Neue Deutsche Welle, particularly on "Die Reklamation", and is noted for lyrical themes addressing social and personal topics, as heard in songs such as "Guten Tag" and "Müssen nur wollen". In April 2012, the band announced an indefinite hiatus.
Before the formation of the band, Judith Holofernes performed as a solo artist in Berlin and independently released the EP "Kamikazefliege" in 1999. Wir sind Helden was formed in 2000 after Holofernes met Pola Roy and Jean-Michel Tourette at a music workshop in Hamburg; Mark Tavassol joined shortly thereafter. The band name reflects an intention to reinterpret the concept of “heroes” in a more everyday or anti-heroic sense and was also influenced by earlier musical acts and the song "'Heroes'".
In 2002, the band self-released the EP "Guten Tag". The title track’s success led to increased industry interest and a recording contract with Labels, an EMI imprint. The band also gained television exposure, contributing to its growing profile.
The debut single "Guten Tag" was released in 2003, followed by "Müssen nur wollen". Both songs entered the German singles chart. The album "Die Reklamation" combined uptempo, punk-influenced tracks with more introspective material. It debuted in the top 10 and later peaked at number 2. The band received several awards at the 2004 ECHO Awards.
The second album, "Von hier an blind", released in 2005, presented a more introspective approach compared to its predecessor. It reached number 1 in both Germany and Austria and remained in the German top 10 for an extended period. Singles such as "Gekommen um zu bleiben" and "Nur ein Wort" charted in Germany. During this period, the band performed at major events including "Rock am Ring" and "Live 8". Holofernes and Roy married in 2006.
The third album, "Soundso", released in 2007, reached number 2 in Germany and Austria. The album further reduced earlier stylistic influences and incorporated additional musical elements, including brass and orchestral arrangements. The lead single "Endlich ein Grund zur Panik" charted in Germany.
After a hiatus from releases, the band returned in 2010 with "Bring mich nach Hause", their fourth studio album. By this time, they had signed with Sony Music. The album was produced by Ian Davenport and emphasized the use of live instrumentation. It reached number 1 in both Germany and Austria. The single "Alles" was released from the album and entered the German singles chart. Around this time, the band toured with "EMMA6".
On 4 April 2012, Wir sind Helden announced an indefinite hiatus, citing personal and logistical reasons. In 2014, Judith Holofernes released her first solo album, "Ein leichtes Schwert".
