Small ethnic group belonging to the Tupi-Guarani, the Wayãpi aboriginals live in the heart of the Amazon forest on the borders with Brazil. Jean-Michel Beaudet directed these recordings in the Seventies, in situ since the traditions from Amazon people (as of High-Xingu, where Wayãpi are from) do not oppose what we call "music" and their immediate environment, the forest (following the example of the Palawan people in the Philippines). During the meetings that give place to the musical practice, one finds the tule clarinets from High-Xingu, but also a unique instrument in the world, the kõõkõõ, made of a group of six reeds settled on one pipe and which is used as a rhythmic impetus for the other participants. The result is an ode to mutlicentrism, each sound following its own way, opposing and answering each other, in a freedom and indeterminacy that could have made John Cage jealous. Read more on Last.fm.
