VLADIMIR STOUPEL Pianist Vladimir Stoupel is an individualist with an extraordinarily rich tonal and emotional palette. The Washington Post recently praised his “protean range of expression” and Der Tagesspiegel Berlin described his performance as “enthralling and atmospherically dense.” His extraordinary technical command allows him to explore the outermost limits of expression, mesmerizing audiences with his musical intensity. “Stoupel’s interpretational style fascinates,” remarked the Bavarian Radio about his recording of the complete Scriabin Sonatas. In addition to numerous concerts in Europe and the USA, the release of this recording on the Audite label, and two further CDs – “The Life of the Machines” and “Elegy for the Jewish Villages” (both EDA, 2007) – number among the most important events of the 2007/2008 season. Vladimir Stoupel has been a guest soloist with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the German Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Russian State Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Staatskapelle Mainz, and the Staatsphilharmonie Kassel. In the United States, he has been heard with orchestras including the Wheeling Symphony, Lancaster Symphony and Lake Placid Sinfonietta. He has collaborated with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Michail Jurowski, Leopold Hager, Marek Janowski, Steven Sloane, Stefan Malzew, Patrik Ringborg, and Günther Neuhold. Vladimir Stoupel has appeared on many of the world’s notable stages, including Berlin’s Philharmonie and Konzerthaus, Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Hamburg’s Grosse Musikhalle, and Dortmund’s Konzerthaus, to name just a few. Festival appearances include the renowned Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Piano en Valois (France), Brandenburgische Sommerkonzerte (Germany), Printemps des Arts in Monte Carlo, the Helsinki Festival, and Festival La Grange de Meslay in Tours (France). The 2008-2009 season brings continued new journeys for the pianist, whose interpretations span an extraordinarily large piano repertoire including rarely heard compositions of the post-war era and obscure composers of the 20th century. His upcoming solo recital in Berlin’s Konzerthaus will include works of Mendelssohn, Rathaus, Schulhoff, Klein, Laks and Schul. Highlights of his concerto engagements include performances of Dohnányi’s Second Piano Concerto with the Bielefeld Philharmonic broadcast live by DeutschlandRadio, Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto with the Berlin Symphony in Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with the Neubrandenburg Philharmonie as well as opening the season of the Wheeling Symphony with Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Other notable collaborations include an appearance in Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Music Hall with the Breuninger Quartet, and a performance in Konzerthaus Berlin with violist Tabea Zimmermann. CD productions and radio recordings for DeutschlandRadio Berlin and the West German Radio (WDR) Cologne round off the season. His extensive discography includes the piano works of Shostakovich (RPC, 1988), the complete piano works of Arnold Schoenberg (auris subtilis, 2001), chamber music by Schumann and Brahms (auris subtilis, 2002), the complete sonatas of Alexander Scriabin (Audite, 2008), and selected piano music of the twentieth century (EDA, 2007). His recording of Henri Vieuxtemps’ complete works for viola and piano with violist Thomas Selditz received the coveted “German Record Critics’ Award” (“Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”). Vladimir Stoupel began his artistic training at the age of three with his mother, the pianist Rimma Bobritskaia. He later studied piano with Evgeny Malinin and conducting with Gennady Rozhdestvensky at the Moscow Conservatory, and was a pupil of the renowned Russian pianist Lazar Berman for five years.
