Biography
TUNS is a Canadian supergroup (although the members dislike the term) featuring Sloan bassist/vocalist (and former CBC Radio 3 host) Chris Murphy, Matt Murphy from Super Friendz and Flashing Lights, and Mike O'Neill from Inbreds. The acronym TUNS is a nod to the former Technical University of Nova Scotia in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where the young Murphys (who are not related) used to go for science fairs or to play basketball. (The university, which specialized in architecture, computer science and engineering, is now merged into Dalhousie University, also in Halifax.)
TUNS' single "Mind Over Matter" (which could easily be mistaken for a Sloan song) reached #1 on CBC Radio 2's Radio 2 Top 20 chart the week of July 8, 2016. As is the case with Sloan and the Super Friendz, each member writes and sings – three songs apiece in the case of TUNS' debut – evoking some familiarity with their previous work. Influences of R.E.M. can be heard in TUNS' music. Matt Murphy and Mike O'Neill readily acknowledge R.E.M. influences; Chris Murphy supposedly dislikes and disavows R.E.M. ("Chris can't stand R.E.M.," Matt Murphy stated in an interview, possibly in jest.)
