Todd Steed and the Suns of Phere are a perennial Pop/Rock gods in Knoxville, TN. The group more or less came out of the indie quasi-legends Smokin' Dave and the Premo Dopes. They Suns of Phere and perform Southern flavored music with wry, but hilarious and timely songs often referring to something going on in the world of the Sunsphere City. Newer songs show a exploration of sorts, both musically and geographically- often far from the reaches of East Tennessee. (Todd lived in Asia and Eastern Europe for a while- and those influences seem to be coming to the surface.) With a small core ensemble including Dave Nichols (Smokin' Dave And The Premo Dopes), Ed Richardson, Bob Deck and Jeff Bills (V-roys) - , Todd Steed and the Suns of Phere's CDs often feature the cream of the crop of musicians and visiting vocalist from Knoxville and the surrounding area - the place where icons like Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, Roy Acuff and many other mega-stars of country music history found their first voice on WNOX and the Cas Walker show. The newest recording is Eskimo Hair, released on August 8, 2008 at 8:00 AM, EDT. It's a record that speaks of travel, home, and haircuts. Many are calling this the deepest and most musical of the Suns of Phere Trilogy. Also in the works is a rumored two CD set of ambient satire. Whatever that is.
