Biography
The Kirby Sewell Band is a high energy, soul slinging R & B band, reaching out with modern interpretations. Known for their passionate live performances, the monster six-piece extravaganza perform what they call Alternative Blues, with melodic heart pulling stories from the depths of an old soul, while breathing new musical life into a genre. Their arrangements are amped up, invigorating, though
t provoking, playing against the grain.
This Blues concoction can be heard on the band’s new CD Bought Myself A Hammer. Instead of going for a 'sound,' the band likens their new album as an 'iPod of the Blues,’ because of its diversity. The new CD pays homage to many styles, which all came from traditional Blues making its influence on North American popular music. Blues, Rock, Pop, Country, and Soul come together, weaved into a musical collage, lyrically roaming through realms dark and brooding, uplifting and playful.
The band is fronted by award winning vocalist Kirby Sewell, who has been heralded as "one of the finest Male Blues vocalists in Canada" by Real Blues Magazine. Kirby, known to break a sweat on stage, enjoys connecting with the nuances of his own life and sharing them in unforgettable vocal performances, leaving audiences with no doubt that the Blues has spent time with him.
“The physically imposing, honey-voiced frontman, delivers effortless authenticity and sincerity” says FFWD weekly’s Gerry Krochak about the big Blues shouter’s performances.
Mike Bell of the Calgary Herald writes “Sewell’s powerful vocals and unflinching frontman presence are magic.”
It is this magic that started in humble beginnings with the bands first performance in May of 2009 at the Calgary Lilac Festival, and every since they have been having a lot of fun, leaving the people with smiles on their faces after each performance. This energy has built up into countless sold out performances at top regional venues like The Ironwood, Cantos/National Music Centre of Canada, the Skookum Barndance series, and Edmonton’s Festival Place.
In 2011, the Kirby Sewell Band were honored to be invited to perform at the San Jose Jazz Festival, and at San Francisco’s Biscuit & Blues while on their first Pacific Northwest tour. The year included many highlights at regional festivals & concerts opening for the likes of Eric Lindell, Trombone Shorty, Edgar Winter, Bedouin Soundclash, Coco Montoya, Monkey Junk and Savoy Brown.
In 2012, the Hammer is in the bag, and ready to hit the road with the Kirby Sewell Band’s mix of modern Blues that’s going to ‘nail a smile to your face!’
