The Great North Special (1999-2003) formed at Vassar College in the late 1990s.
Originally composed of Evan Haskell (drums), Adam Krug (keys, vocals), John Montavon-McKillip (bass), Hagen Kyi (guitar) and Lucas O'Neill (vocals), the group eventually added James Brown (saxophone, vocals), Terrence Harris aka Mercury (vocals) and Darvey Santner (guitar).
A staple in the Hudson Valley for four years, GNS was a fusion/hip-hop band that recorded one album, "Earthdrop," at Station Hill Studios in Germantown, N.Y. under the direction of production and engineering team Jason Martin and Kale Kaposhilin.
Frequent guest performers included Joe Mintz (drums), Eric Lybeck (guitar), Shakir Shibli aka Theory Engine (vocals) and Baje One of Junk Science (vocals).
Aside from numerous shows at Vassar, including gigs opening for George Clinton and Wordsworth, the band played shows at the Rhinecliff Hotel (Rhinecliff, N.Y.), Oasis (New Paltz, N.Y.), Bard College (N.Y.), Hampshire College (Mass.), Connecticut College (Conn.), the Living Seed (New Paltz, N.Y.) and Milagro's (Tivoli, N.Y.), among many others. New York City venues included Rebar, Tobacco Road, the Lion's Den, the Elbow Room and Downtime.
GNS performed six shows in Key West during the spring of 2001. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
