As a mod quintet, The Stateside Souls quickly established itself on the South London R&B circuit. Tom Jones' manager, Gordon Mills, saw them at a place called The Establishment, duly offering to promote the group. According to their press hype, the band members all worked in Carnaby Street clothing stores, which led to their name change into The Carnaby.
