Snail Mail is the indie rock solo project of Lindsey Erin Jordan, an American guitarist and singer-songwriter born on June 16, 1999. Originally from Ellicott City, Maryland, Jordan began performing as Snail Mail in 2015 at the age of 15 and gained attention with the extended play "Habit" in 2016. After signing with Matador Records, Snail Mail released the debut studio album "Lush" in 2018, followed by the second studio album "Valentine" in 2021. A third studio album, "Ricochet," is scheduled for release on March 27, 2026.
Lindsey Jordan was raised in Ellicott City, Maryland. Her mother owns a lingerie store and her father works for a textbook publisher. Jordan was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and began playing guitar at the age of five. She played guitar in her church band and school jazz band and also participated in hockey during her youth. She became interested in punk rock after seeing Paramore on the Riot! tour at age eight and began writing songs in the seventh grade, booking her own performances at restaurants and coffee shops. In 2018, Jordan was admitted to St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn but decided not to attend to focus on her music career.
Jordan released the self-recorded EP "Stick" in 2015 with Snail Mail, joined by Ryan Vieira on bass and Shawn Durham on drums. The band performed its first live show in October 2015 at Baltimore's Unregistered Nurse festival alongside Sheer Mag, Screaming Females, and Priests. Following a short tour in July 2016, Snail Mail released the EP "Habit" through Sister Polygon Records. The six-track EP received coverage from the indie press, with Pitchfork featuring the opening track, "Thinning," in its Best New Track series.
In 2017, Snail Mail toured North America supporting Priests, Girlpool, Waxahatchee, and Beach Fossils. In September 2017, Jordan signed with Matador Records and performed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music. The first headlining tour began in January 2018. "Lush" was released on June 8, 2018, to positive reviews. In 2019, Snail Mail toured internationally and released a version of the song "Pristine" in Simlish for the EA game "The Sims 4: Island Living." Matador Records also reissued "Habit" digitally with a cover of "The 2nd Most Beautiful Girl in the World" by Courtney Love's band.
"Valentine" was released on November 5, 2021, receiving critical acclaim and appearing on multiple year-end lists. Jordan postponed her original US and UK tour dates due to surgery on vocal cord polyps. In 2023, she curated and performed at "Snail Mail's Valentine Fest" in Baltimore and appeared at the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The EP "Valentine (Demos)" was released on November 3, 2023, featuring four previously unreleased demo tracks, including "Easy Thing." Jordan made her acting debut in 2024 in the psychological horror film "I Saw the TV Glow" and contributed a cover of "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins to the soundtrack.
Snail Mail's music is described as indie rock, alternative rock, and emo. Early releases were characterised by sparse, lo-fi, guitar-driven sounds, while "Valentine" incorporated synthesizers, strings, and samples. Jordan's songwriting is noted for its candid and introspective nature, and her work has been described as laid-back and melodically distinctive. She has cited Hayley Williams, Liz Phair, and Avril Lavigne as major influences, along with Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, My Bloody Valentine, and Sheer Mag. Jordan has named Mary Timony as her favourite guitarist and has received lessons from her, and has also been influenced by guitarists including Marnie Stern, Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, and Mark Kozelek.
