Janae Nierah Wherry (born April 15, 1998), known professionally as Sexyy Red, is an American rapper. She gained recognition with her 2023 single "Pound Town" with Tay Keith, which led to the remixed sequel "Pound Town 2" featuring Nicki Minaj, marking her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Her follow-up single "SkeeYee" also achieved commercial success, and both songs were included on her second mixtape "Hood Hottest Princess" (2023). Billboard described Wherry as one of the biggest breakout artists of summer 2023.
In 2023, she appeared on the remixes of DaBaby's "Shake Sumn," NLE Choppa's "Slut Me Out," and Young Nudy's "Peaches & Eggplants" alongside Latto. She also featured on Drake's single "Rich Baby Daddy" from his album "For All the Dogs," which reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2024, she released the single "Get It Sexyy," which preceded her third mixtape "In Sexyy We Trust" (2024). That year, she appeared on Tyler, the Creator's single "Sticky" with GloRilla and Lil Wayne, which peaked within the top ten and received a nomination for Best Rap Song at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Her 2025 single "Whatchu Kno About Me" with GloRilla was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). She won Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards.
Janae Wherry was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She began rapping after writing a diss track directed at a boyfriend who cheated on her. Her stage name "Sexyy Red" derives from a long-standing nickname "Red," referring to her dyed red hair. She previously worked as a hairdresser and a call-centre agent, and graduated from Normandy High School in Missouri.
Wherry released her first song "Ah Thousand Jugs" in 2018 and her debut mixtape "Ghetto Superstar" in 2021. In January 2023, she released "Pound Town," which went viral on social media, followed by a remix of NLE Choppa's "Slut Me Out" in April. "Pound Town 2" featuring Nicki Minaj was released in May, and she released her mixtape "Hood Hottest Princess" in June. In August, she joined Drake on his "It's All a Blur Tour" as an opening act and had previously appeared as a guest at shows. In October 2023, she was featured on Drake's single "Rich Baby Daddy" with SZA. Her first top-ten song in the United States came in October 2024 with Tyler, the Creator, GloRilla, and Lil Wayne on "Sticky" from the album "Chromakopia."
On May 28, 2024, Wherry appeared at WWE NXT to present the new NXT Women's North American Championship, and she hosted the 2024 NXT Battleground PLE on June 9, 2024. In February 2026, she posted a remix of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" on Instagram, which was later deemed unauthorised by Jackson's estate.
