There is two Hardcore bands by this name:
1) Self Defense is a melodic hardcore band from Curitiba, PR - Brazil.
2) Self Defense was a hardcore punk band from Connecticut.
1) By their first year together, back in 2001, SELF DEFENSE was already pointed as one of the highlights on the South Brazilian undergound scene. More instrumentally agressive than the other bands and with well-worked melodic vocal lines, the band soon signed to Oba!Records, one of the biggest independent labels in the Country.
The band started playing at some of the most important events in the underground circuit, such as the Punktober Fest, Curitiba Calling, Petardo and the tradional National Garage. Sharing stage with some of the greatest hardcore bands from Brazil, SELF DEFENSE shows was fallowed by a growing number of fans and melodic hardcore entusiasts.
Three years later (2004) and after some member changings, the band decided to record their first full lenght, following the "Se For... que Seja" demo tape, recorded in 2001.
All the waiting was pretty much rewarded by this 13 energetic songs the band prepared as a calling card. Four years after starting playing together, this record embodies many fases of the band, consolidating them as a great promess in the Brazilian scene. From the very first song in this record is possible to see that this 5 guys from Curitiba went beyond expectatives and finished one record with charming vocal lines over fast/aggresive songs.
4 years later...
SELF DEFENSE has just launched the second full lenght album, "De Mãos Vazias", for free at the Internet. Recorded in 2007 at Solo Studios, one of the most recognized rock studios in Brazil, the album was produced and mixed by Noção de Nada/Deluxe Trio's frontman Gabriel Zander (Bil). 13 new songs brought back all the melodic hardcore influences the band captured in almost 8 years playing the whole country, with modern arrangements.
