There are currently 2 artists using the name Sakawa Boys - a South African indie rock band and a Ghanaian hip-hop outfit. 1) Sakawa Boys are indie rock band from Cape Town, South Africa who play a melancholic blend of shoegazer, post-punk and indie pop. 2) The Sakawa Boys are a hip-hop production outfit. Little is known about the group and its members. Their first release was Sakawa Season, an EP which mysteriously appeared on the internet in 2012. The first full-length project, All Because of These Things, was released New Year's Day of 2014. This instrumental album generated some buzz across the web and was passed around underground hip-hop message boards and blogs. Still, no information on the background of this artist surfaced. In 2015 the group surfaced once again to release another EP, 3, before sinking back into anonymity. Their production style has switched up with every release. Sakawa Season is noted for mostly soul-sampled beats, and an almost lo-fi production quality. All Because of These Things builds off that release with a hint of soul-sampling, but branches out into a more experimental style with harder hitting bass, and elements of jazz and modern pop/indie records. 3 once again switches the style, progressing on the distinctive bass of the previous release but moving away from a more downtempo, mysterious ebb to a lush, almost paradisiacal soundscape. The ability to change production styles so abruptly adds to the mystery of the group, as no one is sure how many producers make up the Sakawa Boys. Origin for the name: "Sakawa is a widespread practice in Ghana and other African countries which combines modern Internet-based fraud practices with ethnic (traditional) or religious rituals. The rituals which are mostly in the form of sacrifices are made so that a supreme being aids them (culprits) in getting whatever they may ask from their victims without their victims denying their request. The term Sakawa initially referred to specific online scams but has since broadened to include all types of online frauds and scams mainly targeting foreigners. The rise in the popularity of sakawa has been fueled by the sakawa culture, this has now become a sub culture in Ghana. Stylish clothes, luxury cars and enormous wealth only serves to promote this nefarious act in clusters of poverty it can be seen as a way of survival." Read more on Last.fm.
