Rough Cutt is an American glam metal band from Los Angeles that released two studio albums on Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1980s. The band did not achieve the commercial success of many other Los Angeles acts of the era, but several members later joined notable groups, including Jake E. Lee with Ozzy Osbourne, Amir Derakh with Orgy and Julien-K, Paul Shortino with Quiet Riot, and Craig Goldy and Claude Schnell with Dio. A more recent lineup debuted in November 2019 at the Bossanova Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, featuring drummer Dave Alford, guitarist Chris Hager, guitarist Darren Housholder, bassist Jeff Buehner, and lead vocalist Steven St. James. The original lineup of Rough Cutt included Paul Shortino on vocals, Dave Alford on drums, Jake E. Lee on guitar, Claude Schnell on keyboards, and Joey Cristofanilli on bass. Lee and Alford had previously been in Ratt, while Schnell and Cristofanilli had been members of Magic. Chris Hager and bassist Matt Thorne, also former Ratt members, joined the band later, replacing Cristofanilli. After leaving Rough Cutt, Cristofanilli briefly joined Ratt and later collaborated with members of Sin to form Jag Wire, releasing "Made in Heaven" in 1985. Jake E. Lee departed in 1982 and was briefly part of Dio before replacing Randy Rhoads as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist. Craig Goldy replaced Lee in Rough Cutt but later joined Giuffria and Dio. Amir Derakh eventually replaced Goldy, completing the lineup with Shortino, Alford, Hager, and Thorne. The band was signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1984 and gained exposure through television appearances and performances in Europe, including the Marquee Club in London and a show at the Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany. Rough Cutt recorded their self-titled debut album "Rough Cutt" in 1985 with producer Tom Allom, following delays with producer Ted Templeman. The band toured in the United States, opening for Krokus and Accept on "The Blitz" tour, and later joined Dio on their "Sacred Heart" tour. The group also performed at the Super Rock '85 festival in Tokyo, Japan, which was released on VHS as "Super Rock In Japan '85," featuring the songs "Black Widow," "Take Her," "Dreamin' Again," and "Piece of My Heart." Their second album, "Wants You!" (1986), was produced by Jack Douglas. Rough Cutt toured with Dio in Puerto Rico and Japan. Shortino left the band during the tour due to internal differences and joined Quiet Riot. Parramore McCarty briefly replaced Shortino before the band disbanded. Derakh, Thorne, and Alford later formed Jailhouse, releasing "Alive in a Mad World" in 1989, while Hager collaborated with Jeff Warner in Woop & the Count. Derakh later found success with Orgy. In 1996, DeRock Records released "Rough Cutt Live," which included three new studio tracks. Jailhouse's full-length album was released in 1998, including the five songs from the 1989 EP. Shortino reformed Rough Cutt in 2000 with a new lineup, releasing "Sacred Place" in 2002 under the name Paul Shortino's The Cutt, featuring contributions from Brad Gillis, Carlos Cavazo, Howard Leese, Dave Whiston, Chuck Wright, and Jason Boyleston. The classic Warner Bros. era lineup reunited for a one-off show at the Viper Room in Hollywood in 2002. Both Warner Bros. albums were reissued in 2005 as "Rough Cutt/Rough Cutt Wants You" by Wounded Bird Records, and remastered versions were released by Rock Candy in 2016. In 2008, Deadline Records issued "Anthology," a double-disc set of pre- and post-Warner Bros. demos and a 1985 live set. In 2019, ten tracks from the Fiddler's Studio Sessions were released as "The Fiddler Sessions '84" on limited edition vinyl. The classic lineup reunited in 2016 and performed on the Monsters of Rock cruise in 2018. In 2019, Shortino performed with Carlos Cavazo's Rough Riot, while Alford and Hager formed a new version of Rough Cutt with Steven St. James, Jeff Buehner, and Darren Housholder, performing their first show on November 29, 2019, in Portland, Oregon. On June 8, 2021, a reformed version of Rough Cutt featuring Paul Shortino, Amir Derakh, and Matt Thorne released "3," their first studio album since 1986's "Wants You!" Another version of the band, including Dave Alford and Chris Hager, was active at the same time, with both groups reporting no ill feelings between them. In mid-2024, founding member Dave Alford announced a new lineup called Rockin' Dave's Rough Cutt, with bassist Shawn Love, vocalist Scott Board, and guitarists Tony Baker and Nathan Smith.
