Ron Kopald was born in Detroit Michigan in 1964. As a child he tried different instruments, including alto saxophone, viola, and piano, but none stuck. Ron started playing his own guitar at 18, a gift from his mother, and began experimenting with home recording at the age of 21. He lived in Boulder Colorado for 4 years, where the music environment was lacking. After moving to Oregon in 1990, Ron founded "Minimum Wage" with fellow band mates Joshua Dahleger and Sean Tuthill. Personal conflicts caused the group to disband within a few months. In 1993, he moved to Bend, Oregon where he was a regular guitar player on the open mic for a blues band, and performed solo finger style and jazz guitar in clubs and coffee shops. Trying to improve musically, he was accepted to the Berklee School of Music in 1995, where he attended for one semester, before moving back to Oregon due to financial and personal reasons. Wanting to finish his education, Ron moved to Eugene, Oregon to finish his Bachelor's degree in music. After spending one term in the classically oriented music department, he decided that the music department at the University of Oregon was not a good investment for a guitar player and opted to finish his degree in Physics. While in Eugene he was in local bands and founded "The Rhythm Method" With Tommy Thompson, which was on and off for several years, finally splitting up due to time constraints and lack of venues to play.
