Rocktronica was a band from Northview High School in Sylvania, OH, who despite a relatively hostile to non-existant fan base, wrote some extremely catchy songs in their short lived career. I'm skeptical as to the availability of their only release proper, Breakdowntown, as only about 50 copies were actually made (by the band themselves) in Sam's basement. Rocktronica originally had just 4 members. Sam Johnson (guitars, vocals, backing vocals, drums, keys, synth-thingy) was one of the main songwriters for the band and brought a, shall we say, unique image to the band. Known much better for his work with the Winks, this is where he really started, before all those low-cut light blue v-neck shirts he loves so much. Sam is an extremely skilled guitarist and also played some trumpet or some shit in the Northview Marching Band. He was a key part in the band and wrote the fan-favorite The Ambiguous case. Ryan Connolly (power bass)brought the popularity to the band. Without Ryan it is very likely that nobody would have ever seen this band live. His girlfriend, and number one band groupie, Annie Durkin brought all the girls to the shows. Of course in a very Eric Clapton/George Harrison sort of way, Annie would later be stolen by Nate Secord. Ryan's pounding bass lines were an instrumental part of the band's success, or lack thereof. Danny Jahns (Lead Guitar, Keys) was the most fucked-up member of the band and was usually grounded. Practicing was the only time Danny was normally allowed out of the house. His greatest accomplishment was most likely the great guitar solo on I'll Tell Ya, the only song anyone ever recognized at their performances. Nate Secord (drums, Guitar, vocals, Backing Vocals, Personality)was another key part of the band and skilled musician. He was also instrumental in getting people to like the band, because he was so likeable himself. If you ever see Nate on stage, give him a vigorous head nod, he will no doubt return the favor. Zach Melchert (stage presence, personality, lead singer) was later added when the band decided to take a crazier route. He is the guy who likes to destroy stuff and do really odd things on stage. Also, does a very good Peanut Butter Jelly Time. Has been known to wear a banana suit. Zach's greatest accomplishment is probably wearing light up pants to the battle of the bands. So those are the guys, individually, just a bunch of kids, but together, for about 6 months, they created something much greater. They had a knack for distancing their audiences and pissing everyone off, but at the same time, they were capable of playing some great shows, or at least having some great local rock n roll moments. The band enjoyed dressing up as animals, or all in jumpsuits or whatever. Their EP, Breakdowntown, was ahead of its time. Well not really. But between the dumbass fights and bullshit, these guys gave us all a good time in a town that God specifically made to piss of teenagers who's sole desire was to get drunk and break shit and shit. Give them a listen, you will be entertained. Read more on Last.fm.
