Poplex (in Hebrew: פופלקס was an Israeli pop band with a post-punk New Wave tint ctive between 1986 and 1987, remembered for their unique style and innovative music videos. Despite their short run, the band left a notable mark on the Israeli music scene.
The group was formed in 1986 under the initiative of the Helicon Israeli record label, which was just starting out. The band members included lead singer Benny Black, guitarist Shahar Ben-Barak, bassistEyal Linor, and drummer Dudi “Duvdev” Shalom. At the time, three members (Black, Ben-Barak, and Linor) were serving in the Israeli military. Poplex’s music videos were considered groundbreaking at a time when video production in Israel was still in its infancy.
That same year, Poplex released their only album, Before Bedtime (לפני השינה), featuring a comic book-style cover with a cutout handle. Most of the songs were written and composed by bassist Eyal Linor, the younger brother of writer Irit Linor. The album was arranged and produced by Dominique Dayan, the younger brother of Naor Dayan and Iggy Dayan. Guest musicians included Rami Kleinstein on keyboards for the song “Stories,” Miki Shaviv on bass for “She Asked,” and Ofra Yossefi, who provided background vocals for three tracks.
The band’s first single, “Itzik,” (איציק) became their biggest hit, earning significant radio play and frequent television appearances. It was ranked 40th in Reshet Gimel’s radio annual chart for 1986. In 2005, Asaf Amdursky recorded a cover of “Itzik” for his double album Forward and Backward, reinterpreting classic Israeli hits from the 1980s. Other singles from Before Bedtime included “Mothers,” “Little Fire,” and “Polish Folk Song.”
Despite the moderate success of their debut album, Poplex disbanded in 1987, only a few months after its release. In the 1990s, Shahar Ben-Barak co-founded the band Gan Hayot (in Hebrew: גן חיות) with Sharon Moldavi, while Eyal Linor formed the band ‘Transistor’.
In 2011, the band reunited to record several new songs. As the members were based in different locations— Eyal Linor in Israel, Shahar Ben-Barak in Washington, and Benny Black in Florida—they recorded remotely, using home software and online track sharing. The first song from this reunion, “Kill Them,” depicted the hallucinations of an angry man watching television.
