The most commercially successful lineup consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Bret Michaels, drummer Rikki Rockett, bassist Bobby Dall, and lead guitarist C.C. DeVille. The band achieved commercial success from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, selling over 40 million records and DVDs worldwide. In 2012, VH1 listed them as the number one "Hair Band of the '80s."
Poison had a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and several other Top 40 singles, including "Talk Dirty to Me," "I Won't Forget You," "Nothin' But a Good Time," "Fallen Angel," "Your Mama Don't Dance," "Unskinny Bop," "Something to Believe In," "Ride the Wind," and "Life Goes On." Their debut album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In" (1986), was certified multi-platinum, followed by "Open Up and Say... Ahh!," which was certified five times platinum in the United States. Their third album, "Flesh & Blood," also achieved multi-platinum status and became their best-selling release. In the 1990s, the band released the live album "Swallow This Live" and underwent lineup changes, with the fourth studio album "Native Tongue" certified Gold and their compilation album "Poison's Greatest Hits: 1986–1996" certified double platinum. The original lineup reunited for a greatest hits tour in 1999. The band subsequently released "Crack a Smile... and More!," "Power to the People," "Hollyweird" (2002), and the compilation "The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock" (2006), which was certified Gold and marked a return to the Billboard Top 20. Since 1986, Poison has released seven studio albums, four live albums, five compilation albums, and twenty-eight singles.
Poison initially formed under the name Paris, with Michaels, Dall, Rockett, and guitarist Matt Smith performing cover songs in Pennsylvania. The band relocated to Los Angeles in 1983 and adopted the name Poison. After several auditions, C.C. DeVille replaced Smith as lead guitarist, bringing the song "Talk Dirty to Me" to the band. Poison signed with Enigma Records in 1986, releasing "Look What the Cat Dragged In," which included singles "Cry Tough," "Talk Dirty to Me," "I Want Action," and "I Won't Forget You." Their second album, "Open Up and Say... Ahh!" (1988), featured "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Nothin' But a Good Time," "Fallen Angel," and a cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance."
"Flesh & Blood" (1990) produced the singles "Unskinny Bop," "Something to Believe In," "Ride the Wind," "Life Goes On," and "Flesh & Blood (Sacrifice)" and achieved multi-platinum sales. "Swallow This Live" (1991) included live recordings from the band's first three albums and four new studio tracks. Guitarist Richie Kotzen replaced DeVille for "Native Tongue" (1993), which was more blues-rock oriented. Blues Saraceno replaced Kotzen later in 1993 to complete the tour.
"Crack a Smile" was recorded in 1994 but delayed due to Michaels’ car accident; tracks were included on the 2000 release "Crack a Smile... and More!," which also featured live recordings from MTV Unplugged. "Power to the People" and "Hollyweird" (2002) followed, with the latter including covers and new material. Compilation albums "Best of Ballads & Blues" (2003) and "The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock" (2006) marked the band's 20th anniversary.
Poison released the covers album "Poison'd!" in 2007 and the live DVD/CD "Live, Raw & Uncut" in 2008. They performed at festivals and award shows including Rock2Wgtn (2008) and the 63rd Tony Awards (2009). Band members pursued solo projects, with Michaels releasing albums such as "Custom Built" (2010) and "Jammin' with Friends" (2013). Rockett co-founded Devil City Angels in 2014, and DeVille, Dall, and Rockett performed as The Special Guests without Michaels in 2015.
The band continued touring, including co-headlining with Def Leppard and Tesla in 2017 and the Nothing But a Good Time Tour in 2018. In 2022, Poison joined Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard for The Stadium Tour. Michaels has stated that he is uncertain whether the band will record another album.
