In 1972, Pestner released his self-titled breakthrough album Oto Pestner, which established him as a rising star in the Slovenian and broader Yugoslav music scene. The album’s success was followed by his involvement with the pop group Pepel in kri, one of the most popular musical groups in Yugoslavia at the time. This collaboration significantly boosted his visibility and helped him reach new audiences. A key moment in Pestner's career came in 1975, when he performed as part of Pepel in kri in the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm.
