Montreux was the name of an American fusion band, specializing in the blend of jazz and bluegrass, with jam elements. The band was active from approximately 1982 until 1990, the name coming from the jazz festival in Switzerland of the same name.
Started in the early 1980s by a gathering of friends who wanted to "create music we never heard before," Montreux formed as the Acoustic-Celtic-Brazilian-Jazz fusion powerhouse of the Windham Hill music label. Arguably started by fiddler Darol Anger, Montreux essentially recorded five records on the album from 1982 until 1989. The four core members consisted of Anger, mandolin player Mike Marshall (who also created some of the group's most noticeable chops through his acoustic guitar playing), pianist Barbara Higbie (who wrote Montreux's most famous tune, "To Be" on the 1987 album "Sign Language"), and bass player Michael Manring. Other rotating members included Andy Narell, Todd Philips, and Tom Miller. Though the band broke apart in 1990 to pursue other interests, many of them collaborate on each other's albums and occasionally perform together. Read more on Last.fm.
