Mikey and Matty Gervais have been making music together their entire lives. They have a musical language that is all their own, and listening to them sing is like being let in on a cherished secret, one that is by turns melancholy and playful. Matt and Mike have spent the last seven years as the singer and lead guitarist of the energetic, irrepressible Seattle retro-pop band, Curtains For You. They have toured with The Head and the Heart, opened for The Posies and participated in showcases with the Seattle Rock Orchestra. For the last year, they have been secretly brewing up a full-length album of new material that represents the best of their decades-long collaboration. Though it is beautifully mastered, Harbor Island is a true bedroom record. It was recorded entirely in Mikey's tiny apartment. With the exception of backup vocals by Melissa and Stephanie Reese, some masterful trumpet-playing by fellow Curtains For You bandmate Nick Holman and a guest spot on violin by Charity Rose Thielen, they made every sound and played every instrument on the record themselves. In addition to the more traditional instruments--guitar, piano, harmonica, clarinet--they improvised percussion with doors and light switches, bike pumps and broken glass. They crafted each song in careful layers.
