"Make Up" refers to two different bands:
1. Make Up were a band from Washington DC, consisting of Ian Svenonius on vocals, James Canty on guitar, Michelle Mae on bass, and Steve Gamboa on drums.
The band formed in 1995, with Svenonius, Canty and Gamboa having previously performed together in Nation of Ulysses and the short-lived Cupid Car Club. They combined garage rock, soul and self-styled 'liberation theology' to make a new genre they called Gospel Yeh-Yeh. They released three studio LPs, two live LPs, and a compilation of singles and B-sides. They split in 2000.
Svenonius and Mae went on to play together in Weird War. Svenonius, now a published author, is a member of Chain & the Gang and released an album under the name David Candy. James Canty is currently a guitarist for Ted Leo & the Pharmacists.
2. Make-Up were a Japanese hard rock band formed by Nobuo Yamada (vocals), Hiroaki Matsuzawa (guitar), Yougo Kouno (keyboards), Yasuyoshi Ikeda (bass), and Yoshihiro Toyokawa (drums).
Make-up was formed in Osaka in 1983 by Hiroaki Matsuzawa, line-up was Nobuo Yamada (Vocals), Hiroaki Matsuzawa (Guitar), Yasuyoshi Ikeda (Bass), Yoshihiro Toyokawa (Drums), and Yogo Kono (Keyboards). Make-up released first album 'Howling Will' in April 1984. After that, Make-up released three albums 'Straight Liner (1984)', 'Born to Be Hard (1985)' and 'Rock Legend Of Boys & Girls (1985)'. Make-up has worked on the soundtrack of the TV anime "Saint Seiya" in 1986.
They're popular for many songs which accompanied the Saint Seiya anime series (especially the opening, Pegasus Fantasy).
Make-up was split up in October 1987. The band now is no longer together, Nobuo and Yougo achieved major success playing with the JAM Project. Read more on Last.fm.
