There is more than one band called Leafblower: 1.) Leafblower was borne of cynical comments toward the snobbery of ambient and electronic music. In 2002, Janic Castagner and Mark DeCheser reunited, this time without traditional musical instruments and instead using PCs, old MIDI controllers, and software. The objective – to create the most self-indulgent glitch and ambient sounds with as few audio cables as possible. The music is created through the use of softsynths, self-generated samples & sounds, found sounds, and absorptions from the world around them. Their collaboration has led them to live performances in Philadelphia and NJ, and more recently to incorporate all sorts of various video visualizations to accompany their live performances. Of all things, Leafblower strives for a unique production sound, using their eclectic tastes and unconventional approach to add nuance to their music. Janic Castagner: Janic has always remembered having an ear for the stranger sounds that one hears. From a young age he has enjoyed catching glimpses of the stranger sonic possibilities. From when he first developed an individual taste for music, he was eclectic in his choices, always being drawn by the stranger sides of any genre. This translated to an even more eclettic widening of musical interests, finally leading to his desire to make his own. After attempts at conventional instrumentation, he discovered that he had neither the willingness nor need to get his chops up...just the right instrument to play the sounds in his head. After attending Vancouver Film School in the New Media Dept, he was introduced to the wonders of digital audio, and the possibilities were finally there. He spent the next six months eating and breathing software, learning as much as he could at school as he could, and afterwards at home. Catching up, if you will. When he moved back to New Jersey in 2002 and showed Mark what he had been up to, it was just common understanding that some music would have to be made. Mark DeCheser: Mark was 10 when he was first exposed to the combination of computers and music. Due to the obvious limitations of the Apple //c at the time, his attention toward creating music focused more on physical instruments like the drums and guitar. Besides, a musician’s hobby is cheaper than a computer nerd’s hobby, right? Wrong. So, Mark played drums in various bands throughout middle and high school, all the while casually playing guitar. High school, in a hack circle, was the first place Mark and Janic met. In 1999, he got his first respectable working class PC on which he immediately loaded pirated audio & MIDI apps like Cakewalk & Acid Pro, and taught himself some of his earliest digital audio chops. He used this experience to bullshit his way into a New Media design firm job in New York. There, his work with the internet and design offered him chances to work with experienced audio engineers and multimedia sound designers. In 2002, he reunited with Janic Castagner, this time armed with computers and Reason v1. They began to create self indulgent ambient music and busted grooves that eventually evolved into what is now Leafblower. 2.) A sludge/doom metal band from Atlanta, GA. Read more on Last.fm.
