Electronic duo Klangwart was founded by Markus Detmer (15 March 1972)
and Timo Reuber (31 October 1970) in Cologne in 1996.
Detmer and Reuber first met at the musicology department of Cologne university in 1992 where they came together through their mutual interest in New Music (especially the Minimal Music of Steve Reich and Terry Riley) and electronic music of the 20th century. Heavily inspired by the growing electronic music scene in Cologne since the beginning of the 90s, which was centered around musicians and bands like Mouse On Mars, Thomas Brinkmann, Bernd Friedmann and Marcus Schmickler, Klangwart developed their very own musical language and working aesthetics. Soon they became well-respected protagonists on the edge of composed and improvised electronic music. Klangwart’s first release was the album Inkiek which came out on the duo’s own Klangstelle label in 1997. Following in 1998 was the album Köln-Olpe which explored the topic of motion and travelling between city and countryside. The album Zwei, released in 1999, was a sound study based on two synthesizer tones which explored the extremes between minimal and maximum expression. Between 1997 and 2007 the duo played more than 100 live shows all over the world, including appearances at the festivals Binary Soup (Tokio, Japan) and What Is Music? (Sydney/Melbourne, Austalia). On stage Klangwart present a dense floating collage of electronically generated sounds and rhythms, field recordings, voices and samples, accompanied by slide, super8 or video/dvd projections.
Klangwart don’t use computers. On the basis of analogue and digital synthesizers they mix in samples from cds and manipulate the sounds and patterns through effects, equalizing and panning on the mixing desk.
Their latest release is the album Stadtlandfluss, released in 2008. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
