Kimmo Hakola (born 27 July 1958) is a Finnish Composer. Having studied composition privately with Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kimmo Hakola entered the Sibelius Academy in 1981. At the Sibelius Academy, he also studied with Eero Hämeenniemi and Magnus Lindberg. Hakola is one of the most original composers of his generation, and premieres of his works usually attract exceptional interest. The dramatic power, instrumental dexterity, carefully polished details and capricious, even humorous idiom of his music appeal to audiences and critics alike. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging 'sound and fury' and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues. His largest orchestral works are Piano Concerto (1996) and Clarinet Concerto (2001). He has also written two operas: the 'comics opera' Marsin mestarilaulajat (The Mastersingers of Mars) and Sinapinsiemen (The Mustard Seed; both in 2000).
