During the 1970s Juan Dela Cruz Band came into the music scene releasing “Ang Himig Natin” (Our Melody) which first made Pinoy Rock popular. Some other songs of the band are “Beep Beep”, “Balong Malalim” (Deep Excavation) and “Teachers Enemy Number One”. Juan Dela Cruz band consists of Joey “Pepe” Smith on vocals and drums, Wally Gonzalez on guitars, and Mike Hanopol on bass. After the break-up of Juan Dela Cruz band, both Wally Gonzalez and Mike Hanopol had successful solo careers while Joey “Pepe” Smith had a low profile life. Another Famous rock band that rose to fame during the same decade was Maria Cafra. Maria Cafra consists of members Resty Fabunan, Jun Fabunan, and Rolly Averilla and had famous songs such as “Pangako” (Promise) and “Cool ka lang” (Calm Down). Juan Dela Cruz band “marked the birth of a new wave of music compositions now bandied about as Pinoy Rock ‘n’ Rhythm” in the Ang Himig Natin Free concert on New Year’s Eve 1971 where they played a hard rock rendition of “Bahay Kubo" and “Ang Himig Natin” (Our Melody) a slow and blues styled song (Manaquil, 1979) “Ang Himig Natin” (Our Melody) was a hit not because of its tempo but because of its lyrics and message which hits hard on the Philippine society (Angeles & Barlaan, 1978).
