J. J. Fad (Just Jammin' Fresh and Def) was a Los Angeles, California based trio of female rappers: MC J.B. (Juana Burns), Baby-D (Dania Birks) and Sassy C. (Michelle Franklin). Signed to Ruthless Records, and produced by NWA's Dr. Dre and Yella, their 1988 debut Supersonic spawned the titular chart hit (Billboard Hot 100: peaked at #31), and was the first Grammy nominated record by a female hip-hop group. Follow up singles were "Way Out" and "Is It Love". The album and title single were both certified gold discs by the Recording Industry Association of America.
The group feuded on wax with artist Roxanne Shante on songs like "Anotha Hoe," their first single released in 1987, "Comin' Correct" from the Coming to America soundtrack and "We Want It All" from Not Just a Fad. They also made reference to fellow West Coast group Oaktown's 3.5.7 on "We Want It All". The latter dis was in retaliation to a line from 3.5.7's single "straight at You" where the lyric went "Last person I knew with a name called J.J. he was tall dark and ugly - all things are cold related and skeezers yo name is gold plated JJ now what does it mean jerks jockers jokes on the team - hummana hummana that was it your first grade second grade that was legit- if you wonder why a should we dis met ya backstage and you acted like S**t".
Their second LP, Not Just a Fad, was released in 1991 but did not fare well on the charts. Singles released were "We in the House" and "Gold".
The group disbanded the following year. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
