Cuthbertson’s singing can bring a bustling pub to a quiet hush; Townsend is a great storyteller; McKinnon performs with his heart on his sleeve; Glesain alternates between percussionist and comedian while Parsons does his best to keep a straight face amongst all the fun.
Their debut album, We're Going to Hang Your Picture High was released independently in November 2008. Recorded by Tasmusic’s Carl Fidler (The Dead Abigails), Hang Your Picture is as much an album as it is a journey.
The opening track, If People Could Put Rainbows in Zoos They Would sees Townsend without a penny or a prayer, submitting himself to whoever it is that provides the weather.
From there, the listener is transported from the edge of despair (To Fall Away, With My Hands) to hope (The Boy Who Couldn’t Change the World, Mother Daughter) and a celebration of life (Willow Rain).
If CDs were records, the listener would find the B-Side to Hang Your Picture to be a less undulating path.
Sometimes I Feel Like There Are Two of Me” and Half True are each a humble acknowledgement of duplicity, Hand-Me-Down is a raw monologue from son to father, while Dandelions, A Sparrow in the Kitchen and You, Me, Everyone speak to the human yearning for purpose and community.
For the launch of “Hang Your Picture,” the band took 1000 photographic portraits of ordinary people from their home state. These were then displayed on the walls around the venue. They made their point: You are worth celebrating. We’re Going to Hang Your Picture High is for you.
BAND MEMBER INFORMATION:
DANIEL TOWNSEND has been called “one of the best songwriters in Tasmania” (Tasmusic’s Carl Fidler, formerly of The Dead Abigails). His music has featured on international television and has been recorded on a solo album.
BEN MCKINNON has released a number of solo recordings and is also one of the key organisers of the successful Enough concerts, part of the Make Poverty History campaign, and is an active advocate for global justice issues.
MARY CUTHBERTSON has sung for more than a decade, including on national television. She has worked with young people seeking to find purpose and meaning, and is currently coordinating Invisible Events, an exciting new venture in entertainment and community-building.
TIGDH GLESAIN is a musical all-rounder who probably won’t speak of his time in the Top 40, nor will he mention his international sojourns or frequent folk festival appearances. He loves music, his family and making the world a better place.
JON PARSONS is a self-confessed “guitar nerd” who has performed with several of northern Tasmania’s top acts, including Nathan Wheldon and the Two Timers and The Emma Fair Band.
