Insideman grew up with his feet planted firmly in front of a mixer and tape decks, so it’s no surprise to see his feet still planted there firmly, even if the equipment has evolved a little since the days of watching his Dad digging through crates of Soul & Pop music as a kid.
But it was during the glory days of Jungle, circa 1994, that he stumbled across a Dreamscape tape pack, and was hooked on the sounds of drums and bass. His own decks followed swiftly, and in 1997, whilst frequenting the Record Basement in Reading, his calling as a pirate radio DJ began, with a set on local station Sub FM, with the studio based in a mate’s kitchen. His first paid residency was in 99’, playing House music at a local club, when he also began playing on Code Red FM in West London with schoolmate JP (now Dubstep producer Rodney Rolls).
2001 saw a move to new station “Too Hot fm” in Reading, which despite being raided a couple of years later, secured JP & Biddle a residency at super-club ‘The Matrix’, for the Bassheadz night (run by Prashant Mistry of the Engine Earz). Here, he started playing alongside legends such as Hype, Bad company, J.Majik, the Usual Suspects, John B, Goldie and Craze, until a shooting at the club during the Garage Fever night saw the location shut down soon after.
Another residency at the ‘Alchemy’ night in Portsmouth soon followed, playing alongside Randall and Dr S Gachet, and 2001 also saw their producing career take its first few shaky steps, with the aid of JP’s Atari ST and EMU sampler. Meanwhile, pirate radio continued its irresistible appeal, and with the assistance of Jim Glitch and Gav, the duo started up the now legendary Creative fm – which began broadcasting from a gypsy site, but later moved to the studios at LOAD media in Reading. Creative was a considerable success, for years being the most popular pirate station outside of London, and was responsible for launching nights such as “Timestretch” and “Creation” alongside the Panik Sound system aswell as another off- shoot station, named “Intense fm”. Sadly, 2007 saw the end of the station after trouble with the authorities, but this spurred Insideman to invest in new studio equipment, to focus on his production to a greater degree.
Soon after, John began solo production under the newly founded guise of Insideman, and began the “Transmission Audio Show” on London’s well established Point Blank Fm (90.2, 103.6), whilst securing a residency at the ‘Revolution’ Drum & Bass night alongside Dark Red (XS records), which played host to a raft of legends from the world of Drum & Bass, from LTJ Bukem and Conrad to the Valve Soundsystem, Roni Size, Pendulum, Fabio, and Grooverider.
After being approached in late 2008 by Toby Bolton of Vibration Records to sign an exclusive deal for his music, Insideman decided to hang up his club headphones, and clamp his studio cans firmly to his head, to focus on radio and writing music. A year later, he was offered a place as a business partner in Vibration records, alongside the Australian liquid funk artist A.T.P. and Bristol’s rising star So:Flow, and 2009 saw his debut release ‘Backspace’ on the Vibration Therapy EP (VR003). This coincided with the label being offered a prestigious slot on Bassdrive.com, the world’s most respected, and most listened-to online drum and bass station, where the Insideman currently hosts a monthly slot on rotation playing the hottest cuts from the Vibration camp and the more experimental side of D&B.
2010 & 2011 have been busy years for Insideman, with tracks such as “Genetic By Design” & “A Million Lies” gaining top flight support and radio airplay across the globe.
