Iceburn, later known as The Iceburn Collective is a musical group formed in 1991 in Salt Lake City, Utah, US, by guitarist/vocalist/composer Gentry Densley, the sole constant member through multiple personnel changes. They were known for their eclectic style combining elements of jazz, heavy metal, punk, classical music and greek mythology. Iceburn achieved little mainstream attention, but earned critical praise for their unusual music. Starting out as a 5 piece in 1990, Iceburn formed from the ashes of hardcore bands Insight and Brainstorm. The style of those two bands carried over into their first 7" released in 1991. The original lineup consisted of Jeremy Chatalain - Vocals, Gentry Densley - Guitar, Doug Wright - Bass, James Holder - Guitar, and Joseph “Chubba” Smith - Drums. Soon after, they became a 3 piece with Gentry on vocals and guitar, Chubba on drums and Cache Tolman joining on bass. Their sound at that time could be classified as jazzcore, blending the speed and energy of hardcore punk and metal with the intricacy of jazz. It was in this style that they produced the albums “Firon,” released on Victory records, and it’s follow-up, “Hephaestus” on Revelation Records. In 1996 for the release of “Meditavolutions,” the band had expanded with a saxophonist, percussionist and second guitasist. As the lineup of the band became more fluid, they started going under the name The Iceburn Collective, which better reflected the ever-shifting membership. The band gradually introduced more and more improvisation. By the time they disbanded in 2000, Iceburn was a completely improvised avant-garde jazz unit, featuring saxophone and other woodwind instruments. Gentry performed in several other projects in the following years, including Ascend with Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) and playing with Form of Rocket on their final album, “Men.” In 2007 he formed Eagle Twin, a band which continues today and has released three albums. Bassist Cache Tolman went on to play with Rival Schools in the 2000's. In 2007, The original Iceburn lineup with Chatalain on vocals reunited to play SLUG Magazine’s Making a Scene event, along with local favorites The Stench, Clear and The Corleones. Since then, they continued to perform sporadic shows around the Salt Lake area, featuring the lineup of Gentry on guitar/vocals, Cache on bass, Chubba on drums and James Holder on guitar. On June 25th 2021, Iceburn will release their first new album in 20 years titled “Asclepius” on Southern Lord Records. The rawness of “Asclepius” harks back to the days of their early records, and fuses elements of metal, jazz, psychedelia, and rock with a seamless flow, monolithic riffs, swirling harmonies, and a groove that are the cornerstones of their sound. Read more on Last.fm.
