Grand Canonical Ensemble are a band that like to make pretty sounds. Both Sam and Josh were born in Manchester, in 1988 and 87 respectively, and like kraftwerk, my bloody valentine, galaxie 500, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, ballboy, slowdive, jean-michel jarre amongst others
Post rock, ambient, drone, shoegaze, whatever you want to call it, they were formed from the husk of a band called new art riot. Sam and Josh became bored with doing what was expected of them, and created their first album, the self titled Grand Canonical Ensemble, a mixture of mathematical drones, reverb smeared samples and endless loops of guitars as a soundtrack to whatever you are doing, releasing it for free through Cardiff alternative culture magazine "Journal of Plastik" in late 2009.
Second album, "Two" was released via bandcamp in October 2010, gaining several positive and flattering reviews from around the world. The band announced an intention to release an EP every month via their twitter feed (@GCEband) for the foreseeable future, releasing Space is Boring EP in December 2010, Saying Goodbye EP in January, Oliver Bierhoff EP in February, We Were Wrong EP in March, and Swell EP in April, Lets Stay Friends EP in May, June EP, Savvy EP in July, lets play EP in August, and These Pale Arms EP in September.
They also released a long player cassette titled "Noson O Haf" through Meters and Miles Recordings, an independent cassette based label in based in Charleston, South Carolina. Read more on Last.fm.
