Grabesmond is an Austrian musical project formed in 1995 by Protector and Peter Kubik, both of whom were active in established Austrian black metal bands. The project was originally intended as a means to explore emotional expression and dark atmospheres beyond conventional metal. A limited demo titled "In schwindendem Licht" was released, but the project was disbanded within a few months due to limited commitment from its members.
In 1996, following her relocation to Austria, Lucia-Mariam Fåroutan was introduced to the demo by Peter Kubik. Inspired by the material and interested in forming a band, she revived Grabesmond with a new line-up and a broader musical direction, diverging from the initial style.
In spring 1997, a preliminary recording featuring selected tracks was submitted to Draenor Productions, and the band subsequently signed with the label. Their debut album "Mordenheim" was recorded in October 1997 at Tonstudio Hörnix. The album incorporated mystical, medieval, avant-garde, and classical influences, resulting in a distinctive sound that was difficult to categorise within conventional musical genres.
Following a year-long hiatus, work on a second album began in early 1999. "Xenoglossie" was recorded over nine days at Tonstudio Hörnix and demonstrated a shift towards a more contemporary sound. The album comprised fifteen tracks, combining classical compositions and ethereal soundscapes with mechanical elements, heavy percussion, distorted effects, and female vocals. This release further established Grabesmond as a project with a broad stylistic range, producing music that defies conventional classification and aims to create a sense of otherworldly exploration.
