Giacobo Basevi detto Cervetto , later also called Cervetto the Elder (born around 1682 in Italy , died January 14, 1783 in London) was an Italian cellist and composer. Giacomo or Giacobo Bassevi Cervetto came from a Jewish family based in Verona. After completing his training, he first worked in Italy, went to England in 1728 or 10 years later as a musician and dealer for Italian musical instruments, where he became a member of the Drury Lane Theater by 1748 at the latest . According to Fétis, he had this orchestra for a few years conducted, which has since been refuted. He later had a permanent position in Handel's opera orchestra . He essentially created works for one to three cellos and basso continuo. Through numerous concerts he made his instrument known in England, where the gamba played a dominant role for a long time. The cellist Nochez was one of his students, as was his son James Cervetto (January 8, 1748 - February 5, 1837), to whom he left a fortune of more than £20,000 on his death at the age of 101, he was also a composer and cellist. The painter Johann Zoffany made an oil portrait of Cervetto and a self-portrait with his daughter, Cervetto and his son. Read more on Last.fm.
