Daniel Dal Barba or Daniele Dal Barba (Verona, May 5, 1715 - Verona, July 26, 1801) was an Italian composer, violinist, opera singer and librettist. After abandoning his law studies , he studied self-taught music in his hometown. In 1737 he began to be active as a violinist and in 1743 as an opera singer at the Philharmonic Theater of Verona , where he made his debut with the drama The Recognized Brothers by Pietro Chiarini . He also performed successfully in Venice, in Baldassare Galuppi's theater of Sant'Angelo con Scipione in Spain in 1746 and the following year in Bertoni 's Armida , Scarlatti's Pompeo in Armenia and Pampani's Caduta d'Amulio . In 1744he made his debut as an opera composer with Il Tigrane , in which he played the part of Mithridates. In 1746 he sang in the opera Il Pompeo by Alessandro Scarlatti , which was staged in the same theater. In 1749 he was appointed chapel master of the Filotima Academy and of the Verona Philharmonic Academy. In 1762 he replaced Don Girolamo Zanata at the helm of the Chapel of the Veronese Cathedral, officially succeeding him in 1769 . Dal Barba's music was appreciated by the faithful who liked its spontaneous and popular vein; they were flowing compositions and never excessively long. He introduced a simple style into the church, far from learned academicisms but above all aimed at simple people; he wanted to satisfy the taste of the common man. In 1770 , at the Philharmonic Academy, he met the fourteen-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartaccompanied by his father Leopold. Nine years later, now old and tired, he was replaced at the helm of the Chapel of the Verona Cathedral by Don Bartolomeo Giacometti. Died in 1801, his name was soon forgotten but in recent years the interest in his figure as a musician has led to an in-depth study of the character. Read more on Last.fm.
