Born in Cali, Colombia, Florida-based artist Cyan Heaven is a young contemporary creator who drifts off modern music’s popular tone.
Taking inspiration from mainstream rebels such as Frank Ocean, BROCKHAMPTON, and Mac Miller, underground prodigies such as Portraits Of Tracy, Elias Irving, and KAYTRANADA, and experimental pioneers such as JPEGMAFIA, Ecco2k, and Tyler, The Creator, Cyan Heaven combines various areas to create diverse compilations of art, from the visuals such as album covers and promotion to the music.
Cyan started his career in 2020 releasing a very under-promoted project called ‘Internal’ which featured remixes of popular songs by his main inspirations, but even with the many known references and influences the mixtape showed, it still received backlash because of its quality and low effort.
In early 2021, Cyan started working on his first full-length album ’24/7’ which explains a personal conflict story, this project set off Cyan Heaven’s sound and audience, introducing many people to that immense lineup of sounds Cyan took inspiration from, with its clear influences, many listeners commented about how the main inspirations for the project were clearly presented and lost its originality. While working on this project, Cyan started working on a partly-hidden EP series which also introduced many people to a much more aggressive and experimental version of Cyan’s music. EP was released on April 4th, 2021, setting off the series with features from Nerfonator and Iggy Madison, also introducing recurrent collaborators. With its low ratings and slight backlash, Cyan released EP 2, a more effortless project which featured Max Axé, Iggy Madison, and production credits from Caesar Zave would receive lower ratings and a more considerable amount of backlash. With the 2 disappointments, Cyan released EP 3, with a more experimental and industrial approach, the EP featured Echo Kyoto, dmergrl, Noah Brown, and Korban Baxter. Ratings got higher and the EP series reputation went up considerably.
After these 4 projects, Cyan went into a short break from music, the main reason was his moving between countries, from living in Colombia to an entirely new life in the US, in between this process, Cyan released 2 remix EPs, ‘THE HALF FULL BOTTLE TAPE’ and ‘Live From the Afterlife: 通过我的眼睛呼吸’ which would show another side of Cyan’s skills in production. After these 2 projects, Cyan resumed the works on the EP series, EP 4 was a way more acclaimed project, taking inspirations from cloud-rap and trap artists, the ep featured Korban Baxter, Iggy Madison, and juneythechild. EP 5 was a full switch on the usual Cyan Heaven sound, taking heavy inspiration from artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Westside Gunn, and Freddie Gibbs, the ep featured Nerfonator, Max Axé, and LANTING, it has been the most acclaimed ep in the series.
Fast forward in Cyan’s moving process, he started working on a new streaming tape about a recent attraction story, which was titled ‘Tournesol’, this mixtape introduced a big part of his audience to a more vulnerable and soft sound in Cyan’s music, taking slight inspiration from alternative and neo-soul artists Frank Ocean, Solange and Tyler, The Creator. The mixtape featured LANTING, Dmergrl, Noah Brown, Carolina Williams, and Max Axé. This project showed a more mainstream RnB and neo-soul approach from Cyan’s sound.
‘Blocked Out of Hell’ was not made in a matter of months, the works for the album started in late 2020, with ‘Back In December (Interlude)’ being the instrumental from a song from ‘Internal’ and ‘Rain-castles (Interlude)’ being an interlude for an earlier project concept. The album was first marketed as a completely meaningless piece of art taking a more mainstream and trap approach, with its first appearances being in Caesar Zave’s first version of Camp Nero, where Cyan performed ‘Good Day’, ‘Stealth’, and ‘Rain-castles’. This helped build up hype for the 2 standout tracks, as Stealth was regarded as one of the best songs Cyan had made at the time. Cyan resumed works after a big hiatus on the project before working on ‘Tournesol’, songs like ‘100’, ‘Unstained!’, and ‘The Mishap’ were even organized before Cyan’s moving. The rollout started one month after Camp Nero when Cyan posted a picture of Blocked Out of Hell’s main theme symbol, the chinese symbol for ‘Lock’, the audience already knew about the upcoming project and Cyan had already mentioned it in various stories, posts and messages, the album was set to release. Many songs started developing and Cyan entered non-frequent collaborators such as Mad Sadiq, mad1, LUKAZ, Alikho Igama, and EB.
It took around 4 months for the first single to release, ‘In My Eyes’, with the subtle rollout, the track did suprisingly well introducing Cyan to a wider audience, but then ‘Inspiral’ released, one of the most understreamed songs in Cyan’s catalog, it’s almost surprise drop and almost non-existent rollout didn’t help to boost up its reception. Around 1 month after the second single release, Cyan received mad1’s section for ‘Don’t Believe’, in which he instantly fell in love, Cyan scheduled the release that same day and the track became the most acclaimed out of the 3 singles. Shortly after this, Blocked Out of Hell was set a date for its release, but the album was delayed because of distribution and mastering issues, then a new date was presented but it came off as a disappointment as well, it wasn’t until 2 weeks after its official release that the album was finally sent to the public, with a night full of acclaims and appreciation, the album had an unexpected reception boost. Read more on Last.fm.
