Comic Relief is a band from Zamboanga. Most of their songs and original compositions are written in the Chavacano language. The band was formed in 2001 by four young Filipinos from the city of Zamboanga. They are now well-known in the city for their pop-rock songs that revolve around themes of love and youth. The band’s name, Comic Relief, was inspired by the name of one of the most famous Filipino bands, Parokya ni Edgar. The members of the band are as follows: vocalist Jeloh Bangcal, guitarist Zach Quijano, bassist Randy Ramos, drummer Shilart Anoos, and percussionist Jeff Buhian.
In 2001, two friends, Jeloh and Zack, met at an internet café in Campaner, Zamboanga City, where they used to play online games. Together with Mark de Leon and Ronald Bucoy, they decided to form a rock band. From 2001 to 2004, the group performed songs by the Tagalog band Parokya ni Edgar. In 2004, during their first live concert, the band met Randy Ramos and Shilart Anoos. Together, they began performing songs, and over time, that moment marked the beginning of their success, as the band became stronger and more established.
That same year, the group auditioned for RX Band Breakout, a program on a local radio station. They passed the audition with their English song "Set Me Free". The song became popular on the radio along with other entries from bands that also joined the program. In 2007, the group began uploading amateur videos on YouTube, where many people discovered their original music compositions.
Among the local competitions in the city, the band won several neighborhood and school contests, including Rhythms of Peace, a program by Silsilah, a social organization that promotes peace in Mindanao. The band has already released its first album titled "Sick!!! Calor con Calor se Paga" under 15K Recording. The group continues to work hard and hopes that Chavacano music will gain wider recognition and acceptance in the general Filipino society. Read more on Last.fm.
