cinema staff is a Japanese four-piece alternative rockband formed in Gifu in 2006. Members: Vocals & Guitar: 飯田瑞規 (Mizuki Iida) Guitar: 辻 友貴 (Tomotaka Tsuji) Bass: 三島想平 (Sohei Mishima) Drums: 久野洋平 (Yohei Kuno) History: cinema staff is a Japanese rock band formed 2006. They high school classmates Tsuji, Iida, and Mishima already formed a band in 2003 which was called "REAL". In 2006, with the members entering university, a new drummer joined, and the band changed its name to cinema staff. Around the same time, Mishima became a member of the American Folk Music Research Society at Nanzan University, where he met drummer Kuno, who would complete the band’s current lineup. Based in Nagoya, they began performing actively in the local scene. In September 2006, cinema staff won the grand prize at the COLLEGE ROCK FESTIVAL 2006 national competition, followed by an appearance at the TEENS' MUSIC FESTIVAL 2006 later that year. In November 2008, the band made its indie debut on Zankyo Record. By 2010, cinema staff had grown a dedicated following, selling out their first one-man shows at Shibuya O-nest and CLUB ROCK’N’ROLL. In 2011, they were selected for iTunes Store’s “Japan Sound of 2011” as one of the ten most promising new artists. The following year, their self-titled album won the Tokai Block Prize at the CD Shop Awards 2012, and they made their major debut on Pony Canyon with their EP "into the green". In 2013, the band gained national attention with their single “great escape”, which served as the second ending theme for the hit anime Attack on Titan. That same year, Mishima launched the independent festival OOPARTS in their home prefecture of Gifu, aiming to give back to their local community — a tradition that has continued annually. cinema staff’s 2014 album Bokyo (Nostalgia) was nominated for the Music Jacket Award 2014, followed by SOLUTION E.P. in 2016. The latter included the opening theme “Kirimari” for Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V. Later that year, they released their first triple A-side EP Vektor E.P., alongside their self-produced event “Shinema no Kinema.” Their sixth studio album Netsugen (Heat Source) came out in 2017. In 2018, they released the official support song “HYPER CHANT” for the J.League football club FC Gifu. The band marked their first compilation with the 2019 release of BEST OF THE SUPER CINEMA 2008–2011 / 2012–2019. In November 2021, cinema staff released their seventh full-length album, Kaitei yori Ai wo Komete (From the Deep Sea, with Love), through THIS TIME Inc. and PCI MUSIC, reaffirming their place as one of Japan’s most enduring and imaginative alternative rock bands. cinema staff kicked off 2024 with "Haien", a collaboration with yama, who had risen to the ranks of top artists with "Haru wo Tsugeru". They performed in front of 20,000 enthusiastic audiences at "ATTACK FES", a live festival celebrating the 10th anniversary of the anime "Attack on Titan". Throughout the summer, they appeared at numerous festivals, including ARABAKI ROCK FEST. and COMING KOBE24. Starting with the eight-week Liquidroom event "BATTLE OF LIQUIDROOM & MASTER OF LIQUIDROOM", they hosted their first two-day sold-out festival, OOPARTS, in their hometown of Gifu, and then the past album reenactment live tour "Zen'ei Kaikoshugi part4.1", and finally their first solo show at Zepp DiverCity in eight years. Meanwhile, they've also made good on their long-awaited overseas live offers. Although their first performance in China, which included a festival and a solo show, was postponed due to a typhoon, they held their first live show in five years in Taiwan, and the long-awaited enthusiasm of their fans demonstrated their enduring popularity in Asia. In 2025, OOPARTS was held at Gifu City Cultural Center on April 12th and 13th. It sold out faster than ever before. A new version of FC Gifu's official support song, "HYPER CHAT", which had long been recorded with fans' cheers, was released. On June 8th, they held their first solo show in three years at the finally renovated Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall. On July 23rd, they announced the release of their eighth album, "PLASTIC YOUTH", and a nationwide tour. The album contains 10 tracks, including "Crossroads", a song about their hometown, where they continue to host festivals in Gifu, and how they have gone from chasing their dreams to carrying the dreams of young people on their shoulders, and "BRIGHTER", featuring up-and-coming track maker Suiso. The tour will kick off at Ebisu Liquid Room on August 1st and will take them to 14 locations nationwide. The tour finale will be held at Shinagawa Stellar Ball on March 14th, 2026. Tomotaka Tsuji (born April 28) – guitar Originally from Gifu Prefecture, he graduated from Nagoya Institute of Technology and serves as the band’s leader. Since January 2013, he has played guitar and provided backing vocals in the band peelingwards alongside Mishima. He was also a support guitarist for envy for some dates of their European tour in 2025. Mizuki Iida (born April 8) – vocals, guitar Also from Gifu Prefecture, he contributes lyrics to several songs, including “Cycle,” “Moso Kairo,” “unsung,” and “somehow.” On October 24, 2018, he released his first solo work, Memai, as a digital-only release. He also participated as a guest vocalist on the song “Rakuen no Kimi,” the ending theme for the second season of Tokyo Ghoul:re. His older brother is singer and illustrator Toshiki Iida. Sohei Mishima (born August 30) – bass From Mizuho, Gifu Prefecture, he has been responsible for writing lyrics and composing music since the band’s formation. On September 16, 2020, he released his first solo album, plan B, as a digital-only release. He is married to Hiromi Hirohiro, bassist and vocalist of the band tricot.
