With style, groove and humour as boldly free as artists such as
Beck, and a darker sense of space like The National and Bon Iver,
Catch Release will have you hooked.
Soul and folk melodies layer on top of edgier jazz chords, and classical
instrumentation, creating a cinematic soundscape. Cheeky, yet enigmatic
frontman Tom Lee-Richards gives the music place with his suggestive lyrical
imagery, creating mood and moments of child like wonder.
Catch Release formed in early 2010, when Tom L-R envisioned a fresh sound
combining jazz, reggae, soul, classical, folk and pop elements. To support this
diversity of style French horn, Clarinet, Violin, Organ, Bass, and percussion
made an appearance, and a unique style of Beat boxing.
Bill Bate adds to the playfully eclectic mix with his background
in African percussion. Navin Gulavita (Violin and effects) and
Tim Hannah (French Horn) bring strong floating melodies to the picture,
and Sean Hamilton builds the groove on Bass.
The band in its earliest form played in venues across Melbourne such as
The Espy, The Vineyard, Veludo, The Cornish Arms, and The Builders Arms
among others, winning a round of the Storytellers competition run by MLG
Presents in 2010.
The grand sound as it is today was first realised in February last year whilst
recording ‘Berrybabe’ and ‘The owners’.
The first official single, ‘Driver’ “a warm, stylish song with numerous tempo
changes” (Melbourne City Newspaper) was released at The Northcote
Social Club on June 1st. C R played to a full crowd, selling their entire run of
singles on the night.
The NSC, and Melting Pot, who presented the night, considered it to be a
great success.
Currently Catch Release are crafting more songs to appear on the debut
album coming out in the following few months.
The group is planning to tour wider Victoria as well as interstate to share their
music with new audiences. You can expect a dynamic show with bare honest
moments, followed by rising infectious groove, not to mention the occasional
Dolphin mating call on their most requested song ‘Moko and Opo’. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
