Biography

Antonio Mortaro (fl 1587-1610) was an Italian composer. A Franciscan friar, he was organist at the monastery in Milan by 1598 and of Novara Cathedral in 1602; he returned to Brescia after 1606. Most of his sacred music (10 bks, 1595-1610) is for multiple choirs in the Venetian style and includes forward-looking concertato-like pieces. He also wrote pleasing canzonets (Fiammelle amorose).
