Alexandre Levy (November 10, 1864 — January 17, 1892) was a Brazilian composer, pianist and conductor. Born in São Paulo, he pioneered a fusion of classical composition with brazilian folklore and regional rhythms. He was son of french merchant Henrique Luis Levy, founder of Casa Levy, a music store that was part of São Paulo's cultural life in the second half of the XIX century. Alexandre first learned the piano with his brother Luis, that was also a composer and pianist. Later, Alexandre studied the piano with Gabriel Giraudon, a french pianist living in Brazil. In 1887 Levy travelled to Europe, where he studied with Vincenzo Ferroni and Émile Durand, that also teached Claude Debussy. Back to Brazil, Levy produced some musical works, notable for the influence of Robert Schumann and the use of brazilian tradicional rhythms and popular themes, Levy is considered, along with Antônio Carlos Gomes, a forerruner of authentic brazilian erudite music. Alexandre Levy suddently died in São Paulo, from ignored causes, at the age of 27.
