Biography:
The band was formed in 2007. After the breakup of Ryo’s previous band Gullet in 2004, he stepped away from music for several years and focused on design work. Guitarist uta and bassist Hati initially approached him for artwork rather than musical collaboration. After their own band dissolved, they moved to Tokyo and asked Ryo to join them, which led to the formation of 9GOATS BLACK OUT.
The band name was coined by vocalist Ryo: the number “9” derives from his birthday (January 19), while “Goats” refers to his zodiac sign, Capricorn. The words “Black” and “Out” were added to complete the name.
9GOATS BLACK OUT was totally independent and self-produced throughout their career; they launched their own official website (http://9goats.net) and independent label dalli simultaneously on December 24, 2007, followed by the release of their debut EP devils in bedside in limited quantity through their website as well.
It received positive reviews and was properly released for distribution via ONG DISTRIBUTION on April 30, 2008. They followed that up with their first single, "Sleeping Beauty," released September 9. “Sleeping Beauty” entered the Oricon singles chart, peaking at position 161.
Their second EP Black rain was the first to be released abroad through CLJ Records in Europe.
In 2008, the band also performed alongside Sugar and carried out nationwide tours in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo under the titles “Howlingbird at the Hell” and “Bright garden”.
The band played, and sold out, their first one-man concert titled "Bright garden" at Shibuya BOXX on April 11, 2009. They then held four additional one-man concerts as a tour in May. A DVD of the Bright garden show was released on May 25, 2011.
9GOATS BLACK OUT released their debut full-length album TANATOS on March 24, 2010. The album title “TANATOS” references Thanatos, the personification of death.
A two-man tour with cocklobin titled "deep sleepers" followed in April, as well as a one-man live performance, "the Orphee," on May 7 at Shibuya CLUB QUATTRO. The band then went on an activity pause for the rest of 2010 – however, they played three shows under the name Baphomet in October, November, and December.
The hiatus was officially announced in spring 2010 following the departure of support drummer Aki. During the Baphomet performances, the band played 9GOATS BLACK OUT material with drummer Hiroshi Sasabuchi (ex-Plastic Tree, Cuckoo).
They officially resumed activities with a one-man tour, "Melancholy pool," in January 2011. A DVD comprising of this tour was also released on the same day as the Bright garden DVD (May 25).
By this time, Takumi had been announced as the band’s new support drummer.
From April to June 2011 they went on their first coupling tour, with 犬神サーカス団. The coupling tour was titled “Inu no Atama to Kuroyagi Suupu” (“Dog Head and Black Goat Soup”).
They played various one-man shows and toured with amber gris on their next coupling tour in November 2011 to January 2012.
In November 2011, 9GOATS BLACK OUT contributed a cover of BUCK-TICK’s “Speed” to the compilation album “Crush! 2 – 90’s V-Rock Best Hit Cover Songs –”, which featured contemporary visual kei bands covering influential songs from the 1990s scene.
Their next coupling tour was with Moran and Dolly in February and March of 2012. They also supported 12012 at a show on April 3 with lynch. and amber gris at the LIQUIDROOM.
9GOATS BLACK OUT announced in July 2012 that, after five years, they would disband following their last show on February 9, 2013. Their final shows called "Translucent Hollows" were performed in Nagoya, Osaka, and Tokyo. Their last live "Silence" was performed at Akasaka BLITZ.
On May 29th 2013 they released the best of compilation "ARCHIVES".
Since the disbandment of 9GOATS BLACK OUT, ryo and uta have gone on to join other bands.
ryo is was the vocalist of KEEL and is now the vocalist of HOLLOWGRAM and he formed the electronic project TAG with Kazutoshi Yokoyama. He is also in H.U.G and DÄLLE.
uta was recruited to join 京's band sukekiyo, along with RENTRER EN SOI's 匠 and 未架 and Kannivalism's YUCHI.
Hati moved abroad and does not seem to be active as a musician anymore.
