They were among the most successful pop acts of the 1980s, selling more than 30 million certified records worldwide between 1982 and 1986. Associated with the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the United States, their singles "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Careless Whisper", and "Everything She Wants" all reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their 1984 Christmas single "Last Christmas" has become a recurring holiday classic, with all proceeds from its release going to charity.
Wham! drew influence from funk and soul music and often presented themselves as disaffected youth. Their 1983 debut album, "Fantastic", addressed themes including unemployment in the United Kingdom and adolescent concerns about adulthood. Their second studio album, "Make It Big" (1984), was a global success, reaching number one in both the UK and the United States. In 1985, Wham! made a widely publicized ten-day visit to China, becoming the first Western pop group to perform there. This event was seen as a significant moment in improving cultural relations between China and the West.
The duo disbanded in 1986, with George Michael seeking to focus on music for a more adult audience rather than the primarily teenage fanbase of Wham!. Before separating, they released a farewell single, "The Edge of Heaven", a greatest-hits album titled "The Final", and held a farewell concert named the Final.
