Members: Jared "Punchy" Flynn (drums), Ian Parish (guitar), Blair Pedersen (guitar), Gumble (vocals), Dave Langlands (bass). TUBUKU are an experimental rhythmic metal band based in Wellington, New Zealand. Their music incorporates unpredictable structures with alternative time signatures and brutally delivered lyrics to create a unique sound. Their Stage show is a high energy onslaught of heavy energetic riffs and physical energy. They currently have a 3 track Promo Release named "Haemophilia" which is available from Real Groovy or by contacting the band (tubukumetal@hotmail.com). Formed from the splinters of several previous bands, the original line up of Dave, Ian and Punchy joined forces in order to create interesting original heavy metal music utilizing polyrythms and time signature changes along with creative structuring (moving away from traditional rock n roll format), formulating an intense, fast paced and energetic sound that was constantly mutating in all kinds of abstract directions. This was the point at which they brought in long time friend Gumble, who the boys knew that with the right motivation and some vocal coaching, could achieve great heights. Gumble's voice began to develop along with the sound of the band and so did his talent for writing lyrics containing solid social commentary and exceptional plays on words. About a year and a half into it, Punchy introduced long time friend and musician, Blair who after hanging out with the band a couple of times joined the ranks. They could tell that Bair was quite the exceptional guitar player, a virtuoso if you will. So after discussing ideologies and a couple of jams, Blair was number five. Now that the band was fully formed it was time to get writing as well as gigging. The first few gigs involved a combination of material, originals and covers (everything from Sepultura to Kylie Minogue), but as the original material began to grow the covers were given the flick. An entry into the 2003 Victoria University battle of the bands saw victory, as well as twenty hours studio time courtesy of Flying Saucer recordings. The studio time was accountable for the recordings of the tracks Hypaesthetic and Float. Through a mutual friend the boys were able to acquire some more studio time, enough to do one more track which was added to the other two and pressed onto CD's for the Haemophilia Demo which has been sold at gigs and Real Groovy. The second half of 2004 saw the band gigging nearly every second weekend in the nations capital. This time also saw them join the Terraform national tour, and getting airplay on XSTV and The Rock radio station. At the end of 2004 they took a break from gigging in order to work on more material. This year has seen a return to the live scene with a much more polished sound and solid and dynamic original set. It has also seen number of shows in Auckland and Tauranga in conjunction with Auckland band Terminus. The band currently has as album in the process and some very promising Massey University design students working on several music videos for them. They are working towards their video release tour in November in order to promote this and push their name as the video will be hitting C4 and should create some well deserved media attention. Following the tour the boys will be hitting the studio to record their debut album which promises to be an interesting and dynamic album with something for everyone. Read more on Last.fm.
