Tony McPhee (born Anthony Charles McPhee in Humberston, Lincolnshire, on 23 March 1944; died 6 June 2023) was a prominent British rock guitarist who fronted Groundhogs, a rock/blues trio that began in the early sixties. McPhee also worked as a solo artist and with American blues musicians such as John Lee Hooker, Billy Boy Arnold, Champion Jack Dupree and Eddy Boyd. He played with Herbal Mixture, the John Dummer Band, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, Tony McPhee's Terraplane, Tony McPhee's Turbo, the Tony McPhee Band and Current 93. McPhee turned down an offer from John Mayall to take the guitar spot when Eric Clapton left; McPhee prefered to be his own master. McPhee went on to front many incarnations of Groundhogs, to return to the blues in the nineties. He regularly played blues and duets with his partner Joanna Deacon. Read more on Last.fm.
