"I've been listening to a band from Perth, and Adrian the singer-songwriter for that band is a huge Triffids fan, and he’s only 17 years old. I can’t hear the direct influence, but I really like his music."
--Graham Lee (The Triffids) Mess+Noise interview, Jan '09
Still a young band with an average age of just 18, The Morning Night grew up in Perth's music scene. Three of the band's members have parents who are working musicians; one of whom is Shaun Hoffmann, drummer of 80’s/90’s local indie pop band No Flowers No Wedding Dress and dad to The Morning Night's principal songwriter and band leader Adrian. Today Adrian and Shaun share their own studio, where The Morning Night recorded their 2009 EP Decide what you want and more recently the debut album produced by Ricky Maymi due for release late 2010.
Before all of this recording started, Adrian's two passions of music and football went into battle. Music was victorious, fuelled by an almost obsessive interest in 80's Australian songwriters and bands, sandwiched by the UK sound of the 60's and the more contemporary indie styles from midwest USA. Coinciding with football, Adrian wrote for and played in bands from the age of 15, but the turning point came at the end of the first summer he'd finished high school - guest starring with another legend of the local indie scene, The Triffids, during their reunion gig for the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) in February '09. The performance came just two months before Hoffman's 18th birthday, making him the youngest guest vocalist (and the only to play guitar) for The Triffids, whose other guests included Toby Martin (Youth Group), Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Rob Snarski (Blackeyed Susans) and Steve Kilby (The Church).
It was now time to get serious and after experiencing obligatory lineup shuffling and a band name change, Adrian and some of his very talented and close musical friends finalised the outfit that has become The Morning Night. Vocal harmonies, guitars, violin, keys, bass & drums performing Perth music inspired by 4 decades of songwriting from 3 continents, to say this music is rich is an understatement. Having played performances with the likes of The Triffids, The Stems, Jimmy Barnes, The Fumes, New Rules for Boats, The Panda Band, The Silents, Abbe May and Felicity Groom, The Morning Night continue to get exposure and support from the music industry and audiences around Perth and Fremantle. It is with that noted that they welcome the support of any music lover, anywhere in this vast world they hope to discover...
