In 2017, Logan Thompson initiated an unnamed project that was first featured on a sampler by The Bearded Dragon Productions on February 3, 2017. The track "Anno Domini [Instrumental]" was included in the sampler titled "The Bearded Dragon's Sampler: 3rd Times a Charm". A week later, the project, now known as Symphony of Heaven, released its second single "Stratagem", accompanied by a lyric video. The name Symphony of Heaven was inspired by Romans 8:28. The project's debut EP, "...Of Scars and Soil...", was released on May 30, 2017.
In June 2017, a lyric video for the song "...Of Scars and Soil..." was released by Thompson. That same week, Symphony of Heaven was featured on another compilation by The Bearded Dragon Productions, "Metal From The Dragon (Vol. 1)". A month later, the project, along with Children of Wrath, signed to Nosral Recordings. In November, the band released "In Anger's Midst", the debut single from their upcoming album, "The Season of Death", and announced pre-orders. The album was released on November 24, 2017, via Nosral Recordings.
In August 2018, Thompson adopted the alias Pathos and continued the project as Symphony of Heaven, working on a black metal split EP with Timōrātus and Bismoth.
In February 2019, it was announced that Symphony of Heaven would perform at Audiofeed in 2019, with David Napier of Timōrātus on guitars, Aaron "Ruah" Kirby of Ascending King and Thief on the Cross on bass, and Mason Beard of The Bearded Dragon Productions and Mystic Winter on drums. In March 2019, the band released the split "Body of Christ", featuring material written by Pathos and guest vocals by Ruah. However, Ruah left the band in June 2019 due to a medical emergency.
Eero Tertsunen of Renascent took over Ruah's position in June 2019. The band performed twice at the Audiofeed Festival, sharing the stage with several labelmates. They also performed in Evansville, Indiana, later that year.
In January 2020, the band officially signed with Rottweiler Records and debuted a new single, "You Shall Be As Gods". They performed alongside several other bands in January 2020. In August 2020, they released their debut music video for the track "DeathMarch", which is to be featured on the upcoming EP, "The Ascension of Extinction". The EP was released in September 2020 via Rottweiler Records and received positive reviews. The band was featured in a documentary titled "True American Black Metal" in September 2020.
The band's second album was released in 2021. In April 2021, they released a new track, "Dead Winter Fields", with a video. They also released "Dead Winter Fields" for purchase, along with a new track "Light Upon the Pillars". In June 2021, the band performed at the Kingdom Come Festival after a hiatus of a year and a half. They released "Entropy" along with a video at the end of June.
On July 2, Symphony of Heaven released two tracks, "Entropy" and "SoulRetch", via Rottweiler Records. They followed this up with the release of their third D45, "The Arch of Time", on September 11, featuring the title track and "The Grieving". On September 23, 2021, they released a single, "The Song of September", which was a B-side demo from the "Body of Christ" split. Around this time, David Napier had to temporarily step away from the band due to health issues, leading to the recruitment of Tyler Brown from the Evansville-based band Forthright as a fill-in.
On December 17, 2021, the band's second album, "Maniacal Entropik Discordium", was released. The album was mixed and mastered by Derek Corzine, formerly of Bloodline Severed and Crowned in Sorrow. On October 8, 2023, Onyx announced his departure from the band to focus on his mental health. This led to the band withdrawing from Pit Fest before their performance, leaving Pathøs and Asaph as the remaining members. On October 22, 2023, the band announced the addition of Turadh, Pathos' uncle, as the band's bassist. On November 5, 2023, lead guitarist Øx joined the lineup.
