Christchurch, New Zealand 2005 - 2012 Second Gear Grind was a stoner doom/heavy rock band from the South Island of New Zealand. Throughout their 7 year history the band released two eps, appeared on multiple compilation discs, toured New Zealand alongside The House of Capricorn and Soulseller, and opened for some significant touring acts on their respective trips to New Zealand including The Melvins. Second Gear Grind's material was all independently released. Both EPs are archived in New Zealand's National Library and received breakout reviews by New Zealand Musician Magazine. Being heavily influenced by similar bands, Second Gear Grind lyrically and thematically revolved around drug (particularly marijuana) use, subjective psychological experiences, alcohol abuse and the cosmos. The band disbanded around 2012/13 after Christchurch was devastated by more than 15,000 earthquakes leaving few venues left standing. Subsequently the band lacked any desire to play live any longer. Previous members of Second Gear Grind have moved onto play in, or found, different musical projects including Sinistrous Diabolus and Stone Angels.
