Renie Cares is an indie rock band comprised of two Ukrainian musicians: vocalist Iryna Panchuk and producer Oleksandr Musevych. Iryna, born and raised in Starokostiantyniv, spent a year in Mykolaiv at the age of 17, studying at the Ukrainian Leadership Academy, before moving to Kyiv to enroll at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. In 2021, she teamed up with Oleksandr Musevych, a member of Sheetel, to release several tracks. Their most notable songs, якби and заратустра, gained traction with 30,000 listeners and nearly a million streams on Spotify. According to Iryna, Renie Cares is her alter ego. The band’s name translates as “Renie cares,” where “Renie” is a diminutive of Iryna. Alternatively, it combines two words from different languages: French renie (to deny) and English cares. In late 2023, Renie Cares released their debut album, легка нестерпність буття (“the light unbearability of being”), named after the Czech novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The musicians described the album as “saturated with references to Milan Kundera’s creative legacy, exploring the fundamental pillars of Ukrainian existentialism during a full-scale invasion.” The record, released on November 3, 2023, took a year and a half to produce, though some songs were written as early as 2020. On November 11, Renie Cares performed at Kyiv’s “Bel Etage” alongside Blooms Corda and Disappeared Completely, in a concert organized by the publication Slukh. The band’s drummer, DRUM QUEEN, faced public backlash in July 2024 after performing at a Ukrainian wedding at Italy’s luxurious Lake Como resort alongside MONATIK‘s team. The event, hosted by Russian entertainer Maxim Galkin, drew significant criticism from Ukrainian society. Following this, Iryna Panchuk announced the end of the band’s collaboration with her. Read more on Last.fm.
