Renato Cesari was born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1916 and died in Lecco (Italy) on June 18, 1992. He was an Argentine baritone with a long career and performance at the Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires). Of Italian parents, he studied singing with his father, Virginio Cesari, a former singer who inaugurated the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1908. Endowed with a not too important voice, he knew how to get the most out of it with his natural intelligence. Musically confident and owner of an acute artistic sensibility, he was able to address a large repertoire, varied in terms of styles and authors. He debuted at the Teatro Colón in 1941. For two consecutive years, the Círculo de Críticos Musicales of Buenos Aires awarded him the prize for the best Argentine singer, one of them for his masterful performance of “Papageno” in Mozart's The Magic Flute, under the baton of Erich Kleiber, in 1949. During those years he performed in almost all the theaters in Latin America. He settled in Europe, where he sang in Italy, France, England and Scotland. Living in Italy since 1955, he sang two performances of Il barbiere di Siviglia at La Scala in Milan. In the fifties he was called by the maestro Pablo Sorozábal to record several of his zarzuelas, as well as various baritone romances by other authors. After a long interval he returned to his native country to perform, every year and until the end of his career, in all seasons of the Teatro Colón. In his reappearance in 1964, he was heard as the "Count" in The Marriage of Figaro, by Mozart, with Victoria de los Ángeles. In 1969 he gave new proof of his artistic versatility, assuming the leading role of Doktor Faustus, Ferruccio Busoni, at its premiere in Buenos Aires. In 1989 he was honored by the Konex Foundation with the Best Male Singer Award. Read more on Last.fm.
